Movement Is About More Than Exercise

When you hear the word exercise, what comes to mind? A gym? Running? Sweating through a difficult workout?
For many people, exercise can feel intimidating. But movement doesn't have to look like a traditional workout. Walking your dog is movement. Taking the stairs is movement. Playing with your kids is movement. Dancing in your kitchen is movement. Even a short stretch between meetings counts.
The World Health Organization defines physical activity broadly, including movement during leisure time, transportation, work and everyday life. Movement can also be about much more than fitness. Regular physical activity is associated with benefits for overall health and well-being, including mental health and sleep. But you don't need to start with an intense workout routine. The WHO emphasizes that some movement is better than none. That means a 10-minute walk still counts. Five minutes of stretching still counts. One workout this week still counts.
The best type of movement isn't necessarily the hardest one. It's often the one you actually enjoy enough to keep doing. So instead of asking: "How can I exercise more?" Try asking: "How can I move more?" That small change in perspective can make movement feel less like another task on your to-do list. And more like something that naturally fits into your life.
Movement doesn't have to be perfect. It just has to happen.
